Themes

Choose and customize your store's look, and test it on a phone.

General education, not an official Shopify course. Features, plan names, prices, and screens change; check the official links in each lesson. Businesses and numbers are fictional examples.

What a theme is

A theme is the design template for your store: its layout, menus, and product pages. Shopify offers free themes and paid ones from its Theme Store. A free theme is enough for most beginners. Paid themes are a one-time purchase with their own terms; check them before buying. Only one theme is published at a time.

Choosing a theme

Look at theme demos on your phone. Choose one built for your type and number of products: a few big photos for a small catalog, or strong filtering for many items. Simple and fast beats flashy. Avoid choosing a theme only because it has many features you will never fill.

Applying your brand

In the theme editor, set your logo, colors, and fonts to match your other materials. Replace every demo photo and sample sentence. Keep your homepage short: what you sell, a few featured products or collections, and a clear way to start shopping.

Checking on a phone

Most shoppers browse on phones. Use the editor's mobile preview and then open your store on your own phone. Check that menus open, photos are clear, text is readable, and the Add to cart button is easy to tap.

A real-world example

A candle maker with 12 scents picks a free theme with large product photos, applies her green and cream colors, removes demo sections she cannot fill, and tests the store on her phone and her sister's.

Steps to take

  1. Browse free themes on your phone.
  2. Pick one that fits your product count.
  3. Set logo, colors, and fonts.
  4. Replace all demo content.
  5. Preview on mobile and on a real phone.

Practice: phone test

Ask a friend to find one product and add it to the cart on their phone without your help. Watch where they hesitate.

Check your thinking

Each hesitation points to something to fix: an unclear menu, a hidden button, or a slow page.
