Beginner Practice Exercises

Short hands-on exercises with clear, observable outcomes you can check yourself.

Why practice matters more than reading

You'll get comfortable with AI faster by actually typing prompts than by reading about it. These short exercises each have a clear, observable outcome you can check for yourself — no right-or-wrong grading, just 'did I get the thing I was aiming for.'

Exercise 1: ask and refine a prompt

Pick a real task. Write a first prompt using the four-part framework (goal, situation, task, format). Send it, then send one follow-up asking for a specific change. Outcome to check: your second answer is noticeably closer to what you actually needed than the first.

Exercise 2: try to catch a possible hallucination

Ask an AI tool a specific factual question about your state, industry, or a number you can verify elsewhere. Then check its answer against an official source. Outcome to check: you found at least one detail to verify, and you know whether the AI's answer held up.

Exercise 3: use the prompt library on your own business

Open the Prompt Library, pick one category relevant to you, fill in the blanks with your real details, and send it. Outcome to check: you have one usable draft you could actually use this week, even after editing.

Exercise 4: compare two tools on the same task

Ask the same question to two different AI tools (for example, your usual chatbot and one from Other AI Tools, Compared Plainly). Outcome to check: you can name one real difference between the two answers.

A real-world example

A small bakery owner runs all four exercises in one sitting: she refines a caption prompt until it sounds like her, checks an AI claim about a local vendor permit against her city's actual website (and finds it was slightly wrong), fills in a pricing prompt from the library with her real ingredient costs, and compares two tools' answers to 'suggest a name for a seasonal pie flavor.' By the end she has one usable caption, one corrected fact, one pricing draft, and a clearer sense of which tool she prefers for naming ideas.

Steps to take

  1. Complete Exercise 1 and write down what changed between your first and second prompt.
  2. Complete Exercise 2 and note whether the AI's answer matched the official source.
  3. Complete Exercise 3 and keep the filled-in prompt for your own records.
  4. Complete Exercise 4 and write one sentence comparing the two tools' answers.
