Typing your first question
Most AI chatbots work the same basic way: you type a message into a box and press enter or tap a send button, and a reply appears below it. There's no special syntax required — plain sentences work fine. Start simple: tell it what you're trying to do, like 'I run a small lawn care business and I want to write a text message reminding customers about their appointment tomorrow.'
Follow-up questions keep the conversation going
A follow-up prompt is a message you send after the first reply, inside the same conversation, to adjust or build on what you got. The chatbot remembers everything said earlier in that same chat, so you can say 'make that shorter' or 'now write one for a customer who canceled last time' without repeating your whole business description again.
Starting a new chat on purpose
Starting a new chat clears the conversation's memory of what was said before (though some tools keep limited longer-term memory across chats as a separate setting). Start a new chat when you're switching to an unrelated topic — it keeps the AI's answers more focused, because it isn't mixing in details from an unrelated earlier conversation.
Free vs. paid, in general terms
Most major AI chatbots offer a free way to use them, often with some daily limit or access to an older/faster model, and a paid plan with more usage or access to more capable models and features. Exactly what's included and what it costs changes often, so rather than listing specific prices or features here (which go out of date quickly), check the official site of whichever tool you're using for its current free and paid details before you decide.
A real-world example
A food vendor opens ChatGPT for the first time and types, 'I sell plates at weekend festivals and want three short Instagram captions for this Saturday.' She reads the three captions, then sends a follow-up: 'Make the second one mention it's cash or card.' When she's done, she starts a brand-new chat to ask an unrelated question about a cleaning schedule, instead of continuing in the same thread.
Steps to take
- Open an AI chatbot and type one real question about your business in plain sentences.
- Read the reply, then send one follow-up asking it to adjust something (tone, length, or detail).
- Start a new chat and ask something on a completely different topic.
- Visit the official site of the tool you used and note, in your own words, the general difference between its free and paid options today.
